Critique du film 12 years a slave dans le cadre du cours de civilisation anglaise,
This movie is adapted by 12 Years a Slave, Solomon Northup’s book. It is directed by Steve McQueen released on October 2013 (Canada).
The main characters are:
– Chiwetel Ejiofor who played the black slave : Solomon Northup
– Michael Fassbender who played the white master : Edwin Epps
– Benedict Cumberbatch who played the nice guaranty of slaves : Ford
– Paul Dano who played the malicious white worker of Mr Epps : Tibeats
This is the story of Solomon Northup, a citizen of New-York who is kidnapped in Washington in 1841. He was put in a camp and he must word for a whites. This movie tell us his story, his suffer and pain when he was slave whereas he is a freedom citizen with a job, a social situation and a family. He will be rescued in 1853 and he comes back to his family after 12 years.
It is well adapted, I saw so beautiful landscapes and the autobiographic aspects are not boring at all because of the way that Solomon tell us his story. We can easily figure all the pain, suffer and disappointing of characters. And the whites are also well interpreted: from the beginning to the end we feel their bitterness toward slaves.
Message of the movie
This story was so amazing, I rarely cry when I watch a movie but this time I did. This story reminds us the high price of the freedom and also the unpleasant conditions of life of slaves. Added to that, all this pain is not far of us as we can figure because until today there is still unfair facts and slaves, even it in another way …
And we can ask this following question : until what point human is ready to sacrifice his humanity in order to satisfy his interest ?
But we can say what we want: all of us are slaves, slaves of our love, of our time, of our desires and expectations …
Some quotes …
“For me an aware man cannot beat another one without lose himself more and more” – Solomon
“No sin! There is no sin! A man does how he pleases with his property” – Edwin Epps
